There has been a wee cry from the ranks about mobility so I thought I would show you what I mean and illustrate one of the drills that we do. Now I will say that this is one of the drills and is borrowed from Strength Coach, Will Heffernan over in St.Mary’s Dublin and. It is a good time saver. It is not the only mobility drill we do. But it is effective. When you are working with alot of athletes this is good. Here is Mark aka the Human Pencil performing it…..he is a runner by the way…but I have roped him into do a Fartlek session with the lads down at the local country park during the pre-season…considering he can run the 5k in about 3 minutes that should do the boys well….
I am really enjoying my training at the moment and taking each session as it comes and fitting in two a day when the family and work allows it - which is at least 2 days per week.
My training week is at the moment:
Monday - Squat (AM) / Speed (PM)
Tuesday - Military Pressing
Weds - Regeneration AM and PM
Thursday - Deadlifts (AM) - Conditioning (if i can fit it in…moves to Saturday AM if I can’t)
Friday - Bench Press (note it is at the END of the week)
Saturday - Conditioning
Every 3 weeks I go nuts and do some ‘doubles on 3 of the days and then take a down week on week 4 (very important).
It has been working well for the academy lads too. Eamonn has dropped 2 kg from 92 to 90 whilst leaning up (skinfolds are down) and gaining raw strength in 4 weeks.. Leo needs to ‘cheat more’ (he is trying to put in mass) but is heading in the right direction becuase ultiately he is building good habits and this is what succeeds in the long run. Leo text me there whilst I was downlaoding the Rocky IV soundtrack the other night (some classics) saying that he had just demoslished a 14″ pizza, wings and chips. I measured him the following morning and his body was in pain (too much acid in the diet) and he hadn’t lost any fat and was 2kg heavier. Needless to say if he had a crap he would soon sort that one out. My idea of a cheat meal is 2 tonne of sweet potatoes. Muzzy is still fat.
Here is another vid that was interesting. Answers on a postcard…..
And anohter thing…for my sins I was caught reading bitching about other strength coaches on a forum there the other day. What a waste of time…I know..however…petty minded egotism should be dealt with a swift kick in the nuts if you ask me..if there are any strength coaches reading this blog then I would be delighted to hear from you..say hi…chirp up..drop us a tweet…it is a lonely old profession if you let it consume you with E-G-O.

100% John- Sport/ Strength coaches should leave our egos at the door & aim to serve our sport/ athletes/ clients as best we can, by continuous professional development & application of sport science married tio the ‘art’ of coaching… but as you know, there are some oin the industry who are there to serve their own egos…
mate tell me about it…i stumble across them daily…unfortunately it is a sign of insecurity and believe it or not i was chatting with my physiotherapy collegaue this morning and he is doing an ‘emergency presentation’ to the Irish Society of Physios here next week. even there he says people are looking after their own patch! and this is in a clinical setting..!!
